How CCTV Installation Helps to prevent break-ins in Dawesville

Do CTTV home security cameras deter or reduce crime?

Some of you may ask "Why people still have their stuff stolen even with a security camera?

Why didn't the alarm or the surveillance camera work when the burglar broke into my home?"

Well, the answer is often they don't actually realise that the security cameras are there, meaning their face will often be caught on camera! Or they know the camera is there but take the risk anyway and these criminals often get caught much faster.

Criminals do not want to be seen or recorded - that's one of the main reasons why security cameras are effective. Not to mention that security camera footage is helpful in securing the criminal. The UNC Charlotte of Criminal Justice found that 60% convicted burglars would look for security cameras before moving forward, and 40% of burglars said that the presence of security cameras would motivate them to seek another easier target.

Where CTTV cameras work best is after a crime has been committed. CCTV footage helped catch the 2017 London subway bomber, the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers and in Vancouver, looters during the 2011 Stanley Cup riots. Read on to see some more examples of how CCTV Cameras have helped put criminals away across Perth and the World.

Example 1 - A Peterborough man who broke into a house on his own street while occupants were on holiday has been jailed

In the summer last year, while the occupants of the house where on holiday the man broke into a house in his own street and ransacked the place leaving with two TVs, an X box and a key to the property.

He returned to the house 7 days later and attempted to use the key to enter the house but found that all the locks had been changed and CCTV had been installed. Instead, the man broke into the shed and stole boxes of wires and other items. A CCTV appeal was launched and members of the public identified the man after recognising his distinctive red trainers.

When officers searched his home they found passports belonging to the victim's children and the key he had stolen. The detective said "The man not only burgled a home in his OWN street, he attempted to do it twice thinking that he wouldn't be caught. Thankfully the family has put in measures in place to help prevent the man from entering their home a second time."

The man received 12 months for burglary, nine months for attempted burglary and three months for the shed burglary to be served consecutively.

As you can see the addition of a CCTV system meant the family could catch the man on their own street who stole from them.

Example 2 - Facial recognition catches criminals at China beer festival

Chinese police have used facial recognition technology to catch criminals at a beer festival. 15 wanted individuals were arrested when they turned up to sample the offerings at the annual event in Qingdao - home to Chinas most famous Beer.

Those caught included one man who had been on the run for 10 years. 18 camera installed at 4 entrances to the festival identified each of the suspects in under one second, Qingdao police said.

Dozens of other people with criminal records or a history of drug abuse were refused entrance after computers spotted them.

In the UK, police used facial recognition software to scan the faces of 10 of thousands of revellers at this year's Notting Hill carnival even though civil liberties groups believed such action would discriminatory.

This case uses more advanced technology but CCTV cameras are ultimately how the criminals where caught.

Example 3 - Bungling burglars caught on CCTV ransacking elderly woman's home tried to steal cameras but footage had downloaded

Two bungling burglars who ransacked an elderly woman's home tried to cover their tracks by stealing the CCTV- but the footage had already been downloaded.

The thieves were caught clearly on cameras in the 83-year-old victim's home and police have now released the high definition footage to urge the public to help them catch the criminals.

The men smashed open a key safe box outside the woman's home and then let themselves in. One of the burglars also tried to hide his face behind a black folder but was still quite clearly visible.

The advantage of modern CCTV cameras is that they download footage so even if the camera is damaged or removed criminals can still be caught and charged.

In example 2 facial recognition technology was mentioned but this is expensive and not always an option. In the UK Super recognisers are being used to help catch criminals, what is a super-recogniser? This is a rare group of people who can identify at least 80% of faces they've seen. The Metropolitan Police in the UK use super recognisers within their teams to spot criminals in blurry photographs and fleeting CCTV images - and a new test could reveal if you have the ability to join their ranks.

Ordinary people can recognise about 20% of faces they have glimpsed before but super recognisers can manage 80%.

Roman Emperors employed them to stand behind them at crowded events so that they could learn who was friend or foe. Today they are used in the UK police force.
